Turkey Shootout History

A Staple of the NOVA Lacrosse Scene

Turkey Shootout History

The Oakton Turkey Shootout (TSO) was established in 2000, pioneering off-season lacrosse tournaments in the area. Initially focusing on small-sided games, it became an annual fixture following the Fall Brawl. The event has consistently served as a fundraiser for the Oakton High School Athletic Boosters.

As lacrosse evolved into a year-round, specialized sport, the TSO adapted. The boys' tournament transitioned to full-field 10v10 matches, while the girls' event retained its small-sided 8v8 format.

Marty Joyner, now LaxNOVA Events Director, reflects on the tournament's significance: "During my tenure as head coach at Fairfax High School, the Turkey Shootout was integral to our off-season preparation. LaxNOVA is thrilled to assume management of the TSO and build upon its established legacy."

Starting in 2024, the TSO will feature full-field formats for both genders: 10v10 for boys and 11v11 for girls. To maintain a focus on spring season development, participation will be limited to 15 High School Varsity Programs.
